I am proud to introduce Milian Bonillo of Milian Bonillo Beauty as our first vendor spotlight. She and I met back in April during a styled shoot and later we had a coffee meeting that was scheduled for an hour which turned into two hours. (What can I say, we loved talking about weddings and makeup.) Not only is she the owner of a great company, a beauty blogger, but also an agency represented hair/makeup artist with 10 MGMT.
Tell us about your company?
I’m a cosmetologist who specializes in on-location hair styling, makeup, and men’s grooming for weddings, ad campaigns, and editorials.
How did you get started in the wedding business?
I worked for a makeup retailer and people liked the way I did their makeup. Soon, I got requests to go to clients’ homes and hotels for weddings and special events. I remember thinking at one point, it seems I have a business going.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love that every day is different; one day I’ll be on set with a brand shooting an ad, the next, I’m doing beauty services for a wedding, followed by a day of working from home, writing about beauty and doing pre-production for upcoming photoshoots. I meet interesting people and have a good balance of working on my feet and desk time.
What or who motivates you?
Having a need to create motivates me. I’ve always got to be making something or I don’t feel like I’m really living.
Where do you find your inspiration?
It depends on the job I’m doing. If I’m doing a styled shoot, it can sometimes be the color scheme or theme for the shoot. If I’m doing a bridal updo or makeup application, I often tune in to the person I’m working on and let my vibes lead me to ideas they’ve told me they like and what I’d like to see on them.
What is a wedding trend you are loving right now?
The trend I’m loving now is how people are embracing their own styles. We don’t have to all look one way. I also love wispy, slightly imperfect hairstyles. Face-framing wisps of hair soften the look and float beautifully in images.
Which wedding trend are you glad to see go?
Cookie-cutter looks. I like seeing a connection with a twist, like bridesmaids in the same color dresses but each chose the silhouette and style that works best for her body type. Makeup and hair can also have a cohesive style that looks great when everyone is together, but it’s more interesting when each girl has something a bit unique to work with her own features.
What is the best advice you can give your clients?
Don’t choose vendors based on the lowest price. Find a vendor who you connect with personally, uses a contract and offer quality. Hire at least a day-of planner. No one should work on their wedding day and neither should loved ones be put to work. Go with true professionals for your wedding; it’s one day that’s worthy of it.
What would we be surprised to learn about you?
I’m a dog nerd. I know a lot of the breeds and characteristics, like how Newfoundlands have webbed feet, or how Boston Terriers come in 3 different weight classes.
What do you do when you are not working?
When I’m not working, I’m cuddling with my Boston Terrier and being a basketball mom.
