The Story of Us: Courtney & Viet

Meet Courtney and Viet! A modern Chicago couple getting married this week and find out a little about their love story before they walk down the aisle.  Technology brought them together, an adventurous first date kept them interested and plans for trivia turned into a sweet and yet romantic proposal. They like to keep it simple and traditions are not really their thing (just look at their engagement photos),  but we love them for it!

How did you two meet?

We met on an app, nothing fancy.

How long have you been together?

Since December 2017, a little over a year and a half. When we get married it’ll be about a year and 8 months.

What was your first date like?

We originally were going to go to the Christkindlmarket, but the day we decided to go was too cold, so we decided to just meet at a bar for drinks and see where it went. I had the worst day at work and it was cold, so I almost canceled. After walking around trying to find a bar that wasn’t crowded, we eventually ended up at Harry Caray’s on Dearborn and chatted. Eventually, we decided to continue and get something to eat. So we were going to walk to the blue line. I assumed he knew where we were going, he assumed I did too and after just walking and talking for a while we discovered we were lost. So we hopped in an uber and just rode to the restaurant. After dinner, we both went our separate ways. I told him I would text him my number and it went from there.

How did you get engaged?

We had plans with friends of mine to go play trivia that night. Viet lives by the place where trivia is held, so I was stopping at his place for us to go to dinner then over to trivia afterward. Every time we do dinner he always says, “I have a question for you, do you know what you want for dinner?” I never can decide so it ends up being him that picks. This day, I knew what I wanted though, I really wanted pasta. I get to his place and he’s sleeping on the couch. I wake him up and he says, “I have a question for you, will you marry me?” I was completely in shock and not prepared, it was exactly how I wanted it done though, private and random. I told him, I don’t want to know when it was coming. I assumed I said yes, I don’t know how long it took for me to get the words out though. After that, we went out for pasta and went and did trivia.

What are some of the things you’ve learned about yourselves as you begin the wedding planning process?

I also knew I was a control freak and a perfectionist, but I’ve been surprised at how laid back I am. I’m still striving for as much perfection as possible but I’m trying not to sweat the small stuff, and am doing fairly well at that. I’ve learned how patient Viet is and just how much he wants me to have my perfect day. Any little idea I come up with he fully supports and actively helps to make sure it happens. He’s been the best.

What are you most excited about on your wedding day?

I’m excited about all of it, I can’t wait to walk down the aisle and see him, I can’t wait to be called his wife. I can’t wait to celebrate with our friends and family. I can’t wait for the cake.
